Plenty of robbers don disguises during their crimes. Some wear masks, hats, fake hair and all manner of clothing.
But what the accused robber of a gas station in western Greenwich wore during a Thursday-night heist may be a first.
A Greenwich man wearing 3-D glasses and a black fedora robbed a Mobil gas station on West Putnam Avenue around 8:30 p.m., police said.
Michael J. Rinello, 34, of 30 Windy Knolls, Apt. A, was apprehended a short time after the robbery and charged with first-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Rinello, who was also wearing a dark coat and dark pants, displayed a silver and black toy handgun and demanded cash from the register of the 623 W. Putnam Ave. station, police said.
When the clerk said he would get in trouble if he handed over the money, Rinello reduced his demand to $200, and then reduced the amount again to $60, saying he was in a hurry, police said.
In his conversation with the clerk, Rinello said, "I have to go. I really need the money, my son is sick in the hospital," police said.
